Waterpolo

WHAT IS WATERPOLO?

Combination of Basketball and Soccer played in the Water

BACKGROUND HISTORY

The London Swimming Association drew up the official rules in 1870 to govern the game.

The early game is all about exhibition of brute strength and aquatic wrestling.

Goal was scored by placing a small Indian-rubber ball (5 to 9 inches in diameters) with 2 hands, on the top end of the tank.

In mid 1880s, the game was revolutionized to play in a faster movement, a more widely opened game that involves more and faster swimming technique called the "Trudgeon Stroke".

Rules moved away towards soccer style of play. Goal Post of 10 x 3 feet were set up with goal being scored by being thrown.

Players could only be tackled when they "held" the ball and Ball could no longer be taken under water.

A leather soccer ball has also replaced the small rubber ball.
